Cranial Nerves Flashcards

1
Q

Optic Nerve (1)

A
Cranial nerve (1) is the olfactory nerve, a sensory nerve from nasal cavity to olfactory build to supply smell.
Olfactory is a special sensory nerve (along with 2 - Optic & 8 - Vestibulochlear)

Q

Oculomotor nerve (3)

A

Oculomotor nerve (3) is a motor nerve for eyeball and eyelid movement, for constriction of pupil, for near vision (lens adjustment). Oculomotor (3) works with Tochlear (4) and Abducens (6) to move eye.

Q

Trochlear nerve (4)

A

Trochlear nerve (4) is a motor muscle for eye movement - with the superior oblique muscle. Trochlear nerve (4) works with Oculomotor (3) and Abducens (6) to move eye.

Q

Trigeminal nerve (5)

A

Trigeminal nerve (5) is a mixed nerve.
Motor- for chewing and controls middle ear muscle
Sensory - touch, pain and thermal senses of face (incl scalp and oral cavity - teeth & tongue).

Q

Abducens nerve (6)

A
Abducens nerve (6) s a motor nerve for movement of the eyeballs - abduction (lateral rotation).
Abducens nerve (6) works with Oculomotor nerve (3) and
Trochlear nerve (4) to move eye.

Q

Glossopharyngeal nerve (9)

A

Glossopharyngeal nerve (9) is a mixed nerve. Glosso = tongue, Pharynx = throat.
Sensory- taste (posterior 1/3 of tongue).
Motor- swallowing and secretion if parotid gland.

Q

Vagus nerve (10)

A

Vegus nerve (10) is is a mixed nerve. With wide distribution Vegus is a parasympathetic nerve.
Vegus supplies heart/lungs, liver/kidneys & digestive system:
- Receives sensations from viscera (digestive).
- Control smooth muscle of the viscera
- Controls secretion of digestive fluids and cardiac muscle
- Constriction of respiratory passageways
- Swallowing, vocalizing, coughing
- Decreases heart rate
- Monitors blood pressure and oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood

Q

Which nerves have a motor function?

A

MOTOR NERVES are Oculomotor (3), Trochlear (4), Abducens (6), Accessory (11) & Hypoglossal (12) are as only contain axons of motor neurons as they leave the body.

16
Q

What are features of cranial nerves?

A

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - 12 pairs which pass through various foramina in the bones of the cranium and arise from the brain inside the cranial cavity. Numbers (1-12) are ordered from anterior to posterior. Anterior = closest to front of body, Posterior = furtherest away from front of body.

17
Q

Which nerves are mixed (have both sensory and motor functions)?

A

Nerves 5, 7, 9 & 10 are MIXED NERVES as they contain axons of both sensory neurons entering the brain stem, and motor neurons leaving the brain stem.

18
Q

What does O-O-O-T-T-A-F-V-G-V-A-H mean? = OH OH OH TO TOUCH AND FEEL VIRGIN GIRLS VAGINAS AND HYMENS

A

O-O-O-T-T-A-F-V-G-V-A-H = Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Vestibulocochlear, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, Hypoglossal

19
Q

Which cranial nerves work together to supply the sense of taste to the tongue?

A

The facial nerve (7) and the glossopharyngeal nerve (9) work together to supply sense of taste in the the tongue. Facial nerve (7) supplies the sense of taste for the anterior (back) 2/3 of tongue - and glossopharyngeal (9) supplies the sense of taste for the posterior (tip) 1/3 of tongue.
