Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Optic Nerve (1)
Cranial nerve (1) is the olfactory nerve, a sensory nerve from nasal cavity to olfactory build to supply smell. Olfactory is a special sensory nerve (along with 2 - Optic & 8 - Vestibulochlear)
Optic nerve (2)
Optic nerve (2) is a sensory nerve connecting to retina to supply vision. Optic nerve is a special sensory nerve (is a special sensory nerve, along with 1 - Olfactory & 8 - Vestibulochlear)
Oculomotor nerve (3)
Oculomotor nerve (3) is a motor nerve for eyeball and eyelid movement, for constriction of pupil, for near vision (lens adjustment). Oculomotor (3) works with Tochlear (4) and Abducens (6) to move eye.
Trochlear nerve (4)
Trochlear nerve (4) is a motor muscle for eye movement - with the superior oblique muscle. Trochlear nerve (4) works with Oculomotor (3) and Abducens (6) to move eye.
Trigeminal nerve (5)
Trigeminal nerve (5) is a mixed nerve.
Motor- for chewing and controls middle ear muscle
Sensory - touch, pain and thermal senses of face (incl scalp and oral cavity - teeth & tongue).
Abducens nerve (6)
Abducens nerve (6) s a motor nerve for movement of the eyeballs - abduction (lateral rotation). Abducens nerve (6) works with Oculomotor nerve (3) and Trochlear nerve (4) to move eye.
Facial nerve (7)
Facial nerve (7) is a mixed nerve that supplies all facial muscles, salivary and nasal glands, tears - and taste (anterior 2/3 of tongue).
Vestibulocochlear nerve (8)
Vestibulocochlear nerve (8) is a special sensory nerve for hearing - and balance (equilibrium).
Glossopharyngeal nerve (9)
Glossopharyngeal nerve (9) is a mixed nerve. Glosso = tongue, Pharynx = throat.
Sensory- taste (posterior 1/3 of tongue).
Motor- swallowing and secretion if parotid gland.
Vagus nerve (10)
Vegus nerve (10) is is a mixed nerve. With wide distribution Vegus is a parasympathetic nerve.
Vegus supplies heart/lungs, liver/kidneys & digestive system:
- Receives sensations from viscera (digestive).
- Control smooth muscle of the viscera
- Controls secretion of digestive fluids and cardiac muscle
- Constriction of respiratory passageways
- Swallowing, vocalizing, coughing
- Decreases heart rate
- Monitors blood pressure and oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood
What is cranial nerve 11 and its purpose?
Cranial nerve 11 is the accessory nerve, a motor nerve that supplies movement to the head and pectoral girdle.
What is cranial nerve 12 and its purpose?
Cranial nerve 12 is hypoglossal, a motor nerve that provides speech, swallowing and manipulation of food.
What nerves work together to move the eye?
Oculomotor (3), trochlear (4) and abducens (6) work together to move the eye ball.
What are the special sensory nerves?
The SPECIAL SENSORY NERVES are Olfactory (1) - smell, Optic (2) - sight & Vestibulocochlear (8) - hearing
Which nerves have a motor function?
MOTOR NERVES are Oculomotor (3), Trochlear (4), Abducens (6), Accessory (11) & Hypoglossal (12) are as only contain axons of motor neurons as they leave the body.
