Cranial Nerves Flashcards
Trigeminal Nerve Number
V (5)
Trigeminal Nerve innervates…
Innervates…
- the skin of the lower jaw and muscles of mastication (temporal is, massager and pterygoids)
- skin in the middle of the face
Assessing the Trigeminal Nerve
- clenching jaw and palpating muscles
- open and close mouth to see jaw movement
- moving jaw side to side, out and back
- touching quadrants of face for sensitivity
Facial Nerve Number
VII (7)
Facial nerve innervates…
- muscles for facial experssions, eyelid elevation
- anterior two thirds of tongue
- glands of oral cavity
Assessing Facial Nerve
- symmetry at rest
- raise eyebrows
- blow out cheeks (with resistance)
- smile and frown
- look angry and surprised
Glossopharyngeal and Vagus Nerve Numbers
Glossopharyngeal - IX (9)
Vagus - X (10)
Glossopharyngeal and Vagus Nerves innervate…
Glossopharyngeal - innervates stylopharyngeus muscle (elevates pharynx and larynx)
Vagus - sensory innervation of internal surfaces of the laryngopharynx and larynx, motor innervation to muscles of pharynx, soft palate and larynx
Assessing Glossopharyngeal and Vagus Nerves
- open mouth and say ‘ah’, and ‘ah’ x3
- cough
Accessory Nerve Number
XI (11)
Accessory Nerve innervates…
- innervates sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
Assessing Accessory Nerve
- turn head to each side, and against resistance
- shrug shoulders, against resistance
Hypoglossal Nerve Number
XII (12)
Hypoglossal Nerve Innervates…
Innervates intrinsic and all but one extrinsic tongue muscles
Assessing Hypoglossal Nerve
- inspect tongue for wasting or fasciculation
- protrude tongue and move up, down, left and right
- press tongue against cheek and apply resistance
