Cranial nerves Flashcards
How many cranial nerves are purely motor?
4- trochlear, abducens, accessory, hypoglossal
What is the function of CN I?
Olfactory nerve- smell
What is the function of CN II?
Optic nerve- visual acuity and fields, colour, accommodation and light pupillary reflexes (sensory)
What is the function of CN III?
Oculomotor nerve- eye movements to MR, SR, IR, IO. Pupillary constriction (reflexes). Eyelid opening (levator palpebrae superioris). Tear production
What is the function of CN IV?
Trochlear nerve- eye movement via SO muscle
What is the function of CN V?
Trigeminal nerve- facial sensation via 3 branches: ophthalmic, maxillary, mandibular. Motor to masseter, temporalis and pterygoids. Corneal reflex and jaw jerk.
What is the function of CN VI?
Abducens nerve- eye movement via LR muscle
What is the function of CN VII?
Facial nerve- facial movements including forehead. Taste to anterior tongue. Stapedius muscle.
What is the function of CN VIII?
Vestibulocochlear nerve- hearing and balance
What is the function of CN IX?
Glossopharyngeal nerve- sensation and movement to pharynx eg. swallowing, cough, gag reflex (motor)
What is the function of CN X?
Vagus nerve- PNS, gag reflex
What is the function of CN XI?
Accessory nerve- SCM and trapezius
What is the function of CN XII?
Hypoglossal nerve- tongue movements
Describe the syndrome of 3rd nerve palsy
Oculomotor N palsy
- Eye deviated down and out (SO and LR action)
- Anhydrosis
- Miosis
- Ptosis
Describe the presentation of 6th nerve palsy
Abducens N palsy
-Eye not able to abduct/lateral gaze diplopia
