- Visual acuity - Shelley chart (cover eye not being examined)
- Test for visual fields
- examine with ophthalmoscope

Oculomotor

Sensory and motor - primarily motor
-eyelid and eyeball movement
How do you assess Cranial Nerve III?
- Move eye up, down and peripherally
- Test for accommodation
- Pupillary constriction
- Observe for pots is of upper eyelid
What is Cranial Nerve IV?
Trochlear
What is the function of Cranial Nerve IV?
Sensory and motor - primarily motor
- Innervates superior oblique eye muscle
- Turns eye downward and laterally
How do you assess Cranial Nerve IV?
Inferior lateral movement of the eye
What is Cranial Nerve V?
Trigeminal
What is the function of Cranial Nerve V?
Sensory and motor
- Chewing
- Face and mouth touch and pain
How do you assess Cranial Nerve V?
- Corneal reflex
- Sensation of skin of the face (eyebrow, cheeks, and chin) by using a wisp of cotton
- Chewing, biting, lateral jaw movements (move jaw side to side)
What is Cranial Nerve VI?
Abductees
What is the function of Cranial Nerve VI?
Sensory and motor - primarily motor
- Turns eye laterally
- Proprioception (sensory awareness of part of the body)
How do you assess Cranial Nerve VI?
Inferior lateral eye movements

Facial
What is the function of Cranial Nerve VII?
Sensory and motor
- Controls mot facial expressions
- Secretion of ears and saliva
How do you assess Cranial Nerve VII?
- Taste - anterior two thirds of tongue; sweet - sugar, salty, sour - lemon, bitter (rinse mouth between applications)
- Movement of forehead and mouth
- Raise eyebrows, show teeth, smile, and puff out cheeks
What is Cranial Nerve VIII?
Vestibulocochlear (auditory)
What is the function of Cranial Nerve VIII?
Sensory - Hearing and equilibrium sensation
How do you assess Cranial Nerve VIII?
- Hearing, balance
- Webber and Rinne tests
- Otoscope

Glossopharyngeal

Sensory and motor
- Taste
- Senses carotid blood pressure
- Muscle sense - proprioception, sensory awareness of the body

- Swallowing and phonation
- Taste -posterior one third of tongue

Sensory and motor
- senses aortic blood pressure
- Slow heart rate
- Stimulates digestive organs
- Taste

- Sensations of posterior one third of tongue, throat
- Gag reflex (stimulate back of pharynx with a tongue blade)
- Swallowing and phonation

Spinal Accessory
What is the function of Cranial Nerve XI?
Sensory and motor - primarily motor
- Controls trapezius and sternocleidomastoid
- Controls - swallowing movements
- Muscle sense - proprioception
How do you assess Cranial Nerve XI?
Shoulder movement, shoulder shrug, head rotation - push against examiner’s hand
What is Cranial Nerve XII?
Hypo gloss all
What is the function of Cranial Nerve XII?
Sensory and motor - primarily motor
- Controls tongue movements
- Muscle sense - proprioception
How do you assess Cranial Nerve XII?
Tongue movement - protrude tongue, push tongue into the cheek
