cranial nerve stuff Flashcards
SSA
special senses of vision, hearing, balance
Optic II
Vestibulochochlear IV
GSA
general sensation from skin and mucous membranes (perception of touch, pain, temp)
Trigeminal V
Facial VII
Glossopharyngeal IX
Vagus X
GVA
visceral sensation from parotid, submandibular & sublingual salivary glands, carotid body & sinus, middle ear, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, heart, esophagus, stomach and intestines up to left colic flexure
Facial VII
Glossopharyngeal IX
Vagus X
SVA
taste & smell; olfactory stimuli arouse emotions and induce visceral responses
Olfactory I
Facial VII
Glossopharyngeal IX
Vagus X
GSE
supplies muscles derived from the myotome regions of the embryonic somites (ie muscles of orbit & tongue)
Oculomotor III
Trochlear IV
Abducent VI
Hypoglossal XII
SVE
muscles derived from embryonic branchial arches (ie mescles of pharynx, larynx, & mastication)
Trigeminal V Facial VII Glossopharyngeal IX Vagus X Accessory XI
GVE
consist of the cranial parasympathetic system
Oculomotor III

Glossopharyngeal IX
Vagus X
Facial Nerve VII
GSA - nervus intermedius - sensatin from skin of acoustic meatus
GVA - NI - via greater pertrosal nerve, mucous membranes of nasopharynx & palate
SVA - NI - via chorda tympani nerve - taste from 2/3 tongue, floor of mouth, palate
SVE - muscles of facial expression, stapedius, stylohyoid, post belly of digastric
GVE - greater prtrosal nerve - arasympathetic to lacrimal glands & glands of nose & palate
- chorda tympani nerve - parasympathetic to submandubular salivary glands & sublingual salivary glands
Glossopharyngeal Nerve IX
GSA - cutaneous sensation from external ear
GVA - visceral sensation from parotid gland, carotid body, carotid sinus, pharynx & middle ear
SVA - taste from post 1/3 tongue
SVE - motor to stylopharyngeus muscle
GVE - parasympathetic to parotid gland
Vagus Nerve X
GSA - sensation from auricle of ear, external acoustic meatus, dura mater of posterior cranial fossa
GVA - visceral sensation from bas of tongue, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, heart, esophagus, stomach & intestines (L colic flexure)
SVA - taste from epiglottis & palate
SVE - motor to constrictor muscles of pharynx, intrinsic muscles of larynx, levator veli palatini, cricothyroid, striated muscles of superior 2/3 of esophagus
GVE - parasympathetic to smooth muscles of trachea, bronchi, cardiac muscle, digestive tract (L colic flexure)
Accessory Nerve XI
cranial
SVE - motor to striated muscles of soft palate, pharynx & larynx through fibers that joint the vagus nerve
Spinal
GSE - motor to SCM & trapezius
Otic Ganglion
Glossopharyngeal IX
Inferior salivary nucleus -> tympanic plexus -> lesser petrosal nerve -> OTIC GANG (synapse) -> auriculotemporal (V3)
secretion of saliva from parotid gland
dilation of arterioles
Ciliary Ganglion
Oculomotor III
Edinger-Wesphal -> inferior oblique muscle -> CILIARY GABGLION -> short ciliary nerves
accomodation
pupillary muscle - constriction
Pterygopalatine Ganglion
Facial VII
superior salivary nucleus -> greater petrosal nerve -> PTERYGO GANG -> zygomatic branch V2 -> lacrimal branch of V1
secretion of tears
secretion of saliva (nose/palate)
Submandibular Ganglion
Facial VII
superior salivary nucleus -> NI branch VII & chorda tympani -> lingual nerve (V3) -> SUBMANDIBULAR GANG -> lingual nerve
secretion of saliva from submandibular gland & sublingual gland
dilation of arterioles
