Cranial Nerve IX Flashcards
Where are cell bodies for the motor branch located?
Nucleus Ambiguus
What does nucleus ambiguus contribute to?
Lower motor neurons to cranial nerves IX, X, XI
What does the motor branch of cranial nerve IX innervate?
Stylopharyngeus
What kind of axons innervate the Stylopharyngeus muscle?
Lower motor neurons
Where are general sensory neurons carried from?
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, posterior tongue (behind sulcus terminalis), uvula, palatine tonsil and tympanic cavity
Where are cell bodies located for general sensory?
Inferior ganglion
Which nucleus does axons synapse for general sensory?
Spinal nucleus of trigeminal
Where do some fibers of general sensory come from and synapse?
Come from inferior ganglion, synapse in lower part of nucleus solitarius
What do axons from nucleus solitarius carry?
Afferent information from carotid sinus and carotid body
Where does cranial nerve IX get taste information from?
the posterior part of the tongue (behind the sulcus terminalis) from the inferior ganglion
Where do peripheral processes for taste come from?
posterior 1/3 of the tongue behind the sulcus terminalis
Where do central processes enter and where do they synapse?
enter the CNS and synapse in the superior part of the solitary nucleus
Where are parasympathetics from?
parotid and other glands from inferior salivary nucleus
Where do the parasympathetics go?
to the otic ganglion
What does the inferior salivary nucleus give rise to and what are they carried by?
preganglionic parasympathetic axons carried in the glossopharyngeal nerve
