Cranial Movement and Strain Patterns Flashcards
6 types of Strains
- Flexion/Extension
- Torsion
- Sidebending/Rotation
- Vertical Strain
- Lateral Strain
- Compression
Describe a Torsion Strain
Anterior structures rotate opposite the posterior structures.
AP Axis
Named for superior greater wing of sphenoid
“Which gun goes off”- The Texan in Christian
Describe a Sidebending/Rotation Strain
SBS translates to the named side of dysfunction (left sidebending=SBS moving to the left)
3 Axes: 2 vertical (base of sphenoid + Foramen Magnum) 1 AP axis
Named for side that WIDENS
Rotation occurs the same way as the side bending
Describe a flexion/extension strain
Normal unless one is more accentuated than the other
Describe a vertical strain
Named for the direction of the base of sphenoid
2 transverse axes (sphenoid base+ superior occiput)
Index finger moves away from you= flexion
Index toward you= Extension
Describe a lateral strain
Occurs about 2 vertical axes through sphenoid and foramen magnum
Hands fall AWAY from affected side (or pinkies go towards the affected side)
The affected side also rotates anterior
Describe a compression strain
Occiput and Sphenoid are smashed into each other at the SBS.
Sagittal Axis
Causes include childbirth and head trauma from the front or back
