Cracking And Crude Oil Flashcards
What properties increase as you go down the column ( from 40•c to 400•c )
Boiling point #number of carbon atoms Viscosity
How does fractional distillation work?
Crude oil is heated to a vapour and passes through the fractioning column, the hydrocarbons with very high Bps will turn to liquid at bottom. The others will cool as they rise and condensed and get tapped off as liquids
What are refinery gases used for?
Bottled gas for camping etc
What is gasoline used for?
Petrol for cars
What is kerosene used for?
Fuel for jets, paraffin heaters and lamps
Diesel
Diesel for cars, buses, lorries, trains
What is fuel oil used for?
Fuel for ships
Industrial heating
What is bitumen used for?
Road surfaces and covering roofs of buildings
What are the conditions for cracking?
600-700•c
Silicon dioxide or aluminium oxide catalyst
Why is incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons harmful?
Produces carbon monoxide, poisonous because it reduces the blood capacity to carry oxygen
What happens because of the high temperatures in car engines?
Nitrogen and oxygen react forming nitrogen oxides which are pollutant gases that contribute to acid rain
