Cracking and alkenes 4.7.1.3 & 4.7.2.1 Flashcards
What is cracking?
Taking long-chain hydrocarbons molecules and “cracking” them into smaller, more useful molecules.
Alkanes —–> Alkanes + Alkenes
C12H26 —–> C8H18 + C4H8
What is the product of cracking?
- Alkanes
- Alkenes
What is meant by the term “saturated”?
the hydrocarbon is “full-up” of hydrogens
What are Alkenes?
Alkenes are a homologues series which contain hydrogen and carbon, they all have a carbon DOUBLE bond (C=C) and are unsaturated.
What are alkenes used for?
- to produce polymers
- starting materials for production of many other chemicals.
what are short chained hydrocarbons used for?
- fuel
- making plastics
what is the general formula of alkenes?
CnH2n
what is the formula for ethene?
C2H4
What is the formula for propene?
C3H6
What is the formula for butene?
C4H8
What is the formula for pentene?
C5H10
