Cracking Flashcards
1
Q
what is cracking?
A
splitting up long chain hydrocarbons
2
Q
what does cracking produce?
A
ethene which is needed for making plastics
3
Q
what happens in thermal decompostion?
A
cracking
- breaking molecules down by heating them
- heat long chain hydrocarbons to vaporise it
- vapour passed over powdered catalyst at around 400ºc - 700ºc
4
Q
what bond does alkenes have?
A
double bond C=C
5
Q
are alkenes saturated or unsaturated?
A
unstaurated
6
Q
how do you test for alkene?
A
bromine water + alkene = decolourised
7
Q
how can ethene be reacted with make ethanol?
A
ethene can be hydrated with steam in a catalyst to make ethanol
8
Q
what can alkenes b used to make?
A
polymers
9
Q
what is polymerisation?
A
joining together lots of small alkene molecules(monomers) to form large molecules➡️polymers
10
Q
what is a large problem with polymers?
A
they aren’t biodegradable
