What is usability?
the extent to which a computer system can be used by its users
What goals does usability achieve?
Effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction
Why is usability important?
Low-levels of usability result in loss of productivity, increased user frustration, and increased requirements for system support
People won’t use a system that is difficult to interact with
Problems with devices:
Slowness Unclear directions or processes Incomplete information Buttons or keyboard too small Poor design for human ergonomics Cluttered information Navigation requires a mouse Consistent look/feel throughout program Links not easily recognizable Poor contrast between text and background colors
What are flaws of people?
People’s memory is limited
People make errors
People have decision-making processes based on priorities
People have disabilities
People live in different time zones and countries
People speak different languages
What are Analysis and Design Phase Implications?
Watch users on the current system
Involve users early in the design phase (have users being giving feedback on prototypes)
Include end users in testing
Release beta versions
Conduct focus groups with users after release
Shadow users after release
