CPU and MOTHERBOARD Flashcards
hardware
includes processor, storage, input & output devices
software
includes application software & system software
system unit/chassis
refers to the case that contains motherboard, hard disk drive, memory, etc.
motherboard
aka system board; main circuit board. numerous electronic components are attached to it
central processing unit
aka processor; sometimes called the brain. usually a silicone chip and is covered by the heatsink that absorbs heat and uses a fan
chipset
controls the communication between the cpu, memory, storage, and other accessories. determines how many high speed components the motherboard can support
random access memory
aka main memory; temporarily stores data whenever the computers performs operations. content disappears when computer is turned off
hard disk drive
long term storage that holds data even when computer is turned off
power supply
aka ac adapter; converts electricity to a type of power that the computer can use. different motherboards require wattages. some come with fans
expansion slot
allows users to add various expansion cards. some examples are bluetooth adapter, sound, usb, video
peripheral component interconnect
input/output pathway that connects the cpu via expansion slots
serial advance technology attachment
aka sata; computer bus interfaced used to connect drive disk controllers or host bus adapters with storage
complementary metal oxide semiconductorq
aka cmos battery; responsible for keeping all info intact when the system shuts down. prevents reconfiguration
processor
interprets and carries out basic instructions that operate a computer
microprocessor
on personal computers, all functions of the processor are on a singe chip
processor core
contains the circuitry necessary to execute instructions. the system views each processor as a separate processor
multicore processor
single chip with 2 or more processor cores
control unit
directs and coordinates more of the operations. interprets each instruction then initiates the appropriate action
arithmetic logic unit
performs arithmetic and logic operations
fetching
process of obtaining a program instruction
decoding
process of translating the instructions
executing
carrying out commands
storing
writing results back to the memory
registers
small, high-speed storage that temporarily holds data and instructions
