What is the CPT Code Set used for?
This allows providers and third-party payers the ability to communicate which procedures and services have been performed for patients using consistent language that is accepted by all.
How many categories are in the CPT Code Set?
Three
What are Category I Codes?
Most commonly used and has six sections. Used for outpatient procedures.
What are Category II Codes?
These are supplemental tracking codes used to collect data for reporting performance measurement. These do not have reimbursement value attached to individual codes.
What are Category III Codes?
These are temporary codes used to report emerging technology and experimental medical procedures and services. These codes specify services not included in Category I.
What are the Six Sections in Category I?

- Anesthesia
- Surgery
- Radiology
- Pathology/Laboratory
- Medicine
What are CPT Conventions?
These are rules that guide the user to s code, and in the case that multiple codes are required, the correct sequencing of the codes.

What is a Standalone Code(Parent)?
This will contain the complete description.
What is an Indented Code(Children)?
This will include only each codes unique specifications.
How is the E/M section organized?
According to the place and type of service provided to the patient and further categorized by the patient status.
What are the Key Components for documentation?
History, Examination, Medical Decision Making(MDM)
