CPT Chapter 5 Flashcards
Infection Prevention
process/ability to kill or control the growth of living organisms
biocidal
the absence of microorganisms that cause disease
asepsis
the six-step process of an infection spreading from one host to the next
chain of infection
any activity or procedure that prevents infection or breaks the chain of infection
aseptic technique
clean technique; procedures performed to reduce the number of microorganisms and minimize their spread
asepsis (medical)
procedures performed to eliminate the presence of all microorganisms or prevent the introduction of microorganisms to an area
asepsis (surgical)
act of washing ones hands with soap/water or using an alcohol-based hand rub
hand hygiene
method of transfer of an infectious agent from the reservoir to a susceptible host
mode of transmission
path by which an infectious agent leaves the reservoir
portal of exit
the path used by an infectious agent to enter a susceptible host
portal of entry
a person who is infected with an infectious disease but displays no symptoms
carrier
an inanimate object that can transmit bacteria
formite
place where an infectious agent (microorganism) can survive
reservoir
person or animal that lacks the ability to resist an infection by an infectious agent
susceptible host
microorganism (pathogen) that causes an infectious disease
causative agent
something that is put inside the body but not by swallowing
parenteral
a process that occurs when microorganisms live on or in a host organism, but do not invade tissues/cause damage
colonization
what does SSI stand for?
surgical site infection
what does HLD stand for?
high level disinfection
what does IFU stand for
instructions for use
how long does it take to wash your hands?
20 seconds
how can you interrupt the transmission of a causative agent
eliminate it
name 3 agents in the genitourinary tract
urine, vaginal secretions, semen
how often should you wash your hands?
regularly, before and after PPE
what are the 6 chains of infection?
1.causative agent
2.reservoir

4.mode of transmission
5.portal of entry
6.susceptible host
what is the first thing you should remove before washing hands?
remove all jewelry
what is the ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE 170?
temperature and humidity
what may happen if you wear jewelry in the SPD?
it can harbor microorganisms and some jewelry items m
