EMS
Emergency Medical Services – a network of professionals who provide emergency care and transportation.
Citizen Responder
A person who recognizes an emergency and chooses to act.
Good Samaritan Law
Laws that protect people who provide reasonable assistance to those who are injured or ill.
First Aid
Immediate care given to a person with an injury or sudden illness before advanced help arrives.
Barriers to helping
Fear of doing something wrong, fear of being sued, assuming someone else will help.
Emergency Action Steps
Tap and shout, call 911, check breathing, 2 rescue breaths, check pulse.
Consent
Permission given by a person to receive care.
Implied Consent
Assumed permission when the victim is unresponsive or unable to give consent.
Questions to ask at the scene
What happened? Do you have any medical conditions? Are you taking any medications?
Reasons to call 911
Unconsciousness, trouble breathing, severe bleeding.
Carotid Pulse
Pulse felt on either side of the neck.
Brachial Pulse
Pulse felt on the inside of the upper arm (used for infants).
Signs of respiratory distress
Fast or slow breathing, gasping, wheezing.
Complete airway obstruction signs
Inability to speak, breathe, or cough
Conscious choking adult/child response
5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts.
Conscious choking infant response
5 back blows, 5 chest thrusts using 2 fingers between the nipples.
Unconscious choking adult response
30 compressions, check mouth and remove object, give 2 rescue breaths, repeat.
Cardiovascular disease
A disease of the heart and blood vessels.
Heart Attack
When blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, causing damage to heart muscle.
Cardiac Arrest
When the heart stops beating properly. Needs immediate CPR.
Heart attack symptoms
Chest pain, pain in arm/jaw/back, shortness of breath.
Care for heart attack victim
Call 911, keep person calm, give aspirin if appropriate.
When to give CPR
When the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
Adult CPR cycle
30 compressions, 2 breaths.
