CPR, Chocking, Bleeding, Etc Flashcards
Child CPR steps:
1) Check scene for safety, get parental consent, use PPE
2) Check responsiveness, use shout-tap-shout method (no more than 10sec)
3) If child is Unresponsive, not breathing or gasping CALL 911, get equipment
4) Place child on flat, firm, surface. Kneel beside child.
5) Give chest compressions
6) Give 2 breaths
7) Continue 30:2
How many chest compressions to give a child? Hand position? Body position? Depth? Rate?
30 compressions
2 hands centered on chest
Shoulders directly over hands; elbows locked
Depth 2”
Rate 100-120/min
(Allow chest to return to normal position)
How many breaths do you give a child in CPR? How often?
2 breaths after every 30 compressions
Child CPR, open airway to slightly past- ________ position using the head tilt chin lift technique.
Neutral
How long does each breath last in child CPR?
1 sec , makes chest begin to rise; allow air to exit before giving next breath
If the first breath does not cause the chest to rise, ______ and ensure proper seal before giving _____ breath. If 2nd breath does not make chest rise, an object may be blocking the airway.
Retilt the head, 2nd
In child resuscitation continue giving 30 compressions and 2 breaths, use an ____ as soon as one is available
AED
Infant CPR steps
1) Check scene for safety, get parental consent, use PPE
2) Check responsiveness, use shout-tap-shout method
3) If Infant is not responding, not breathing, or gasping CALL 911, get equipment
4) Place infant on flat, firm, surface
5) Give chest compressions
6) Give 2 breaths
7) Continue 30:2
How many chest compressions to give an infant? Hand position? Body position? Depth? Rate?
30 compressions
Thumbs side by side, on center of infants chest just below nipple line
Stand or kneel to the side of the infant; hips at slight angle
Depth 1.5”
Rate 100-120/min
(Allow chest to return to normal position after each compression
How many chest compressions to breaths for infant CPR? What should be used as soon as one is available?
30:2; use AED as soon as one is available!
Steps of using AED
1) Complete check and call steps
2) turn on AED and follow voice prompts
3) Choose appropriate pads
4) Remove clothing and attach pads correctly
5) plug pad connector cable into AED
6) Prepare to let the AED analyze the hearts rhythm
7) Deliver a shock, if the AED determines one is needed
8) After AED delivers shock, or if no shock is advised, immediately start CPR, begin with compressions
When using an AED for children and infants up to 8 yrs of age or weighing >55lbs, what size pads and setting to use on AED?
Pediatric pads & pediatric settings
When using an AED for adults and children over 8 yrs of age or weighing <55lbs, what size pads and setting to use on AED?
Adult pads
If pediatric pads are unavailable and you need to do CPR on an infant or child less than 8yrs (55lbs or less) can you use adult pads?
Yes
Do not use pediatric pads on a child older than _____ yrs or weighing more than ____ lbs because shock delivered will not be sufficient.
8 yrs, 55lbs
When placing AED chest pads what must you do first?
Remove clothing and if necessary wipe chest dry.
For a child where are AED pads placed?
One pad on upper right side of chest; other pad on lower left side of childs chest (a few inches below the left armpit)
If the AED pads touch where should they be placed?
Middle of chest and on back between shoulder blades
Where to placed AED pads on an infant?
Middle of chest; in between shoulder blades on back
When preparing AED to let it analyze the hearts rhythm, what do you need to make sure of? And what do you say?
Make sure no one is touching the child. CLEAR! (loudly).
Steps to follow when caring for a choking child
1) Check to verify child is choking (if child can speak, cry, cough forcefully, encourage them to keep coughing. Observe and prepare to act if condition changes.
2) If child is unable to speak, cry or cough CALL 911, get equipment
3) give 5 back blows
4) give 5 abdominal thrusts
5) continue giving sets of 5 back blows/5 thrusts until child can cough, cry, or breath or until child becomes unresponsive
When giving a choking child 5 back blows how do you position yourself?
Position yourself to the side and slightly behind the choking child, for a small child you may need to kneel behind them.
Place one on diagonally across the child’s chest and bend them forward at the waist.
Firmly strike the child between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. Each back blow should be separate from the other.
When giving five abdominal thrusts, how do you stand & position yourself?
You have the child stand up and find their navel with two fingers. If you are standing, move behind them & place your front foot in between the child’s feet with your knees slightly bent.
Make a fist with your other hand in place the thumb side against the child’s stomach right above your fingers. Cover your fist with your other hand.
Pull inward and upwards to give in an abdominal thrust. Each abdominal thrust should be forceful and separate from the other.
Caring for a child that is choking & the child becomes unresponsive, what’s your next step?
Lower the child to the floor and begin CPR starting with compressions. After each set of compressions and before attempting breaths, open the child’s mouth, look for the object and, if seen, remove it with a fingers sweep.
