CPR Flashcards
What is the definition of respiratory arrest?
cessation of effective breathing
What is the definition of CPA?
Cardiopulmonary arrest - cessation of effective breathing and cardiac output
What is the definition of ROSC?
Return of spontaneous circulation. Means cardiac output restored not just contraction of the heart muscle
What is the definition of BLS?
Basic life support, ventilation and chest compressions
A - Establish patent airway
B - Breathing - positive pressure ventilation
C - Circulation - compressions
What is the definition of ACLS?
advanced cardiac life support - BLS plus medical/electrical intervention
What is the definition of CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation-BLS and/or ACLS to elicit ROSC
What is this picture showing?

Ventricular flutter
what is the picture showing

Ventricular tachycardia with R on T phenomenon
what is the picture showing?

Third degree AV block
What are the essential items to have in a crash kit?
ET tubes Catheters Bandaging Material Laryngoscope Syringes and needles Drugs
Every Catholic Boy Loves Sucking Dick
What optional extras should you consider having in your crash kit?
Defibrillator Scalpel Suturing material Fluids Pressure bag ETCO2 monitor
What four things should you check for if you have difficulty ventilating?
DOPE Displacement of the tube Obstruction of the tube Pneumothorax Equipment failure
What is it called when there is activity on an ECG and no detectable pulses? how do you treat it?
Pulseless electrical activity treat with adrenaline
What is it called when you have an absence of electrical activity and how do you treat it?
asystole adrenaline
what is ventricular fibrillation treated with?
Difibrillation
What is sinus bradycardia treated with?
Atropine
What is sinus tachycardia treated with?
Lidocaine
What drug is being described? An alpha adrenergic agonist used to ‘restart the heart’ in patients with asystole or PEA
Adrenaline
What drug is being described? A vagolytic drug used to increase the heart rate once it has restarted or to reverse a vasavagal event
Atropine
What drug is being described? Drug used to treat fast ventricular tachycardias before they degenerate to fibrillation?
Lidocaine
How should you give drugs via an ET tube?
Insert via urinary catheter in ET tube. Double the dose and follow by hypotonic solution to aid absorption. Then give a big breath via the ambu bag
When might you want to use calcium gluconate?
severe hypocalcaemia or hyperkalaemia (to bind the potassium)
Why might you want to give sodium bicarbonate to an arresting animal?
many arresting animals are acidotic. acidosis will recur if underlying cause not treated, but CPR unlikely to be effective if pH under 7.2
What is used to aid contact with the skin when defibrillating?
coupling gel NOT SPIRIT
What voltage is generally used for cats?
100J
What voltage is generally used for dogs?
200J
What voltage is generally used for open chest?
50J
WHat are the four main causes of decreased vagal tone?
Vomiting
Defecation and Urination
Respiratory disease
Ocular or neck surgery
What are the 7 jobs to be done when dealing with a crashed patient?
Compression
Ventilation
Pulse checker
ECG monitor
IV access
Runner
Scribe
NB one person must take charge!
HOW many breaths per minute should you do when breathing for a patient?
10-12
Deliver simultaneously with compressions
