CPR Flashcards
Why do we use CPR?
will give a victim the best chance for survival because you are pumping their heart for them
What does an AED do?
An AED only stops an abnormal heart rhythm
What is Ventricular fibrillation
Most common abnormal heart rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest in adults
What is Ventricular tachycardia? What is the initial care?
-Heart beats too fast to pump blood
-Time is crucial
-CPR is the initial care
-4-6 minutes are crucial in their survival
AED
Analyzes the heart rhythm
Delivers electric shock
Corrects one of the abnormal electrical disturbances.
Common Elements
-Common Elements
-on/off mechanism
-Cable and pads
-Analysis capability
-Defibrillation capability
-Prompts
Special Considerations
Water
Remove person from water
Dry person’s chest
Children
May have special pediatric pads
Medication patches and Chest Hair
Medication patches
Remove prior to attaching AED
Chest hair
If necessary, remove
Compression to ventilation ratio for all ages
30 compressions : 2 ventilations
Depth of compressions, differences and ages for adult, child and infant
An infant is anyone under the age of 1. Child: 1 to the point of puberty Adult: puberty
Adult: at least 2 inches (tapping their shoulder) (Check carotid pulse)
Child: 2 inches (1 or 2 hands) (tapping on shoulder) (Check carotid pulse)
Infant: 1 and ½ inches ((2 fingers or 2 thumbs) (tap on baby’s feet) (check brachial pulse )
Rate of compressions: 100- compressions per minute
5 Steps in CPR (unresponsive)
- Make sure the scene is safe
- Check for responsiveness
- Call 911; get help
- Check for breathing and pulse (5-10 seconds)
- Start CPR
4 steps if a found a victim who was responsive
- Check the Scene
- Primary assessment: life threatening injuries
- Check for DOTS: Deformities, Open Wounds, Tenderness, Swelling
- Check for SAMPLE: Signs/Symptoms, Allergies, Medication, Patient & Medical History, Last meal (food, drink), Event Leading up to injury
5 steps in using an AED
- Turn it on
- Listen to prompts
- Apply the pads to bare chest
- Clear to analyze
- Clear to shock
What is an AED?
-Automated, External Defibrillator
-Eliminates abnormal heart rhythm
3 Ways to ventilate and how much air do you give
-Mouth to face shield
-Mouth to mouth
-Mouth to mask
