Q

How to do Sterile Technique

A
  1. Perform hand hygiene
  2. Identify patient and ask about any allergies (latex)
  3. Check sterile glove package for expiration date, make sure it’s dry and unopened
  4. Place gloves on a working space that is at/above waist level
  5. Open wrapper by peeling top layer back, remove inner package, taking care not to touch the inner surface or gloves
  6. With the thumb and the forefinger of the non dominant hand grasp the folded cuff of the glove for the dominant hand, touching only the exposed inside of the glove
  7. Keep the hands above the waistline, lift and hold the glove up and off the inner package with fingers down
  8. Carefully insert dominant hand palm up into glove and pull glove on. Leave the cuff folded until the opposite hand is gloved.
  9. Hold the thumb of the gloved hand outward. Place the fingers of the gloved hand inside the cuff of the remaining glove. Lift it from the wrapper, taking care not to touch anything with the gloves or hands.
  10. Carefully insert non dominant hand into glove. Pull the glove on, taking care that the skin does not touch any of the outer surfaces of the gloves.
  11. Slide the fingers of one hand under the cuff of the other and fully extend the cuff down the arm, touching only the sterile outside of the glove. Repeat for the remaining hand.
  12. Adjust the gloves on both hands if necessary, touching only sterile areas with other sterile areas

Q

What is required for the use of compression socks?

A

Physician’s order

17
Q

What is an important nursing consideration for applying compression socks?

A

Apply the socks in the morning before the patient is out of bed and while patient is supine. If patient is sitting or has been up and about, have patient lie down with legs/feet elevated for at least 15 minutes before applying the socks. Otherwise, the leg vessels are congested with blood, reducing the effectiveness of the stockings.

18
Q

According to the CDC, when is hand washing required instead of using an alcohol-based rub?

A
  1. When hands are visibly dirty
  2. When hands are visibly soiled with (or in contact with) blood or other body fluids
  3. Before eating and after using the restroom
  4. If exposure to certain organisms (C. difficile) is known or suspected
