Q

Risks?

A
  • water baths/Bunsen burners can burn you
  • cork borer and knives are sharp
  • be careful around neat sources, remove anything flammable, keep on safety flame when not in use
  • be careful when using sharp items and cut away from self

Q

Method?

A
  • prepare 8 water baths with temperatures ranging between 0 and 70 degrees, at 10 degree intervals, using a thermometer
  • use a syringe to add 10 cm^3 of distilled water to 8 test tubes and label with temperatures from the range of water baths
  • place each tube in a water bath for 10 minutes
  • cut 8 pieces of beetroot using the same cork borer and cut to the same length of 1cm long and wash the cylinders until they run clear and dry gently with a paper towel
  • add one beetroot to each water bath and leave for 15 minutes
  • set the colorimeter to 0 by using a cuvette of distilled water as a reference value
  • pour 2cm^3 of the supernatant from each water bath into a cuvette and record the absorbance of the solution without the beetroot piece
  • record in a table and plot a graph of transmission against temperature
