CP4 Flashcards
What can waves transfer?
Energy and information
What can waves NOT transfer?
Matter
What direction do particles vibrate in transverse waves?
A right angle to the direction of the wave
What direction do particles vibrate in longitudinal waves?
- Same direction as the wave
- Back and forth
What is wave frequency and what is it measured in?
- Number of waves passing a point each second
- Measured in hertz (Hz)(1 Hz = 1 wave passing each second)
What is a period?
Length of time it takes one wave to pass a given point
What is wavelength?
Distance from a point on one wave to a point in the same position on the next wave
What is the amplitude of a wave?
Maximum distance of a point on the wave away from its rest position
What is the velocity of a wave?
Speed of the wave in the direction it is travelling
Why are solids better for waves to travel through compared to gas?
In a solid ,the particles are closer together, so the waves/particles vibrate more
How can you figure out frequency using the period?
Frequency = 1/period
What is refraction?
- Bending of light
- Happens at the interface between 2 medias (air to glass)
The denser the medium…
…the slower the light travels
When waves slow down…
…it bends towards the normal
When waves speed up…
…it bends away from the normal
