in blood

17
Q

which type of haemophilus influenzae cause the most invasive disease?

A

type b

18
Q

what is the pathway which haemophilus influenzae can enter the human body

A

Throat carriage – invasion of submucosa – blood stream

19
Q

what are the treatment of meningitis induced by haemophilus influenzae

A

cefttriaxone, cefotaxime, ampicillin

chemoprohylaxis - rifampicin

vaccine available

what is the normal habitat for streptococcus pneumoniae

A

human respiratory tract

22
Q

what is the treatment for meningitis induced by streptococcus pneumoniae

A

ceftriaxone, ceftotaxime

vaccine available

23
Q

what must be used in conjunction the rest of the antibiotics used in streptococcus pneumoniae induced meningitis

A

steriods - Dexamethasone

24
Q

what agents causes neonatal meningitis?

A

Group B beta-haemolytic Streptococci
Escherichia coli
Listeria monocytogenes

25
Q

what is the treatment of neonatal meningitis?

A

cefotaxime, ampicillin and gentamicin

26
Q

what are some symptoms for TB meningitis?

A

insidious onset

27
Q

what usually cause brain abscess?

A

usually bacterial - from spread of adjacent area

28
Q

what is sort of pathogens are clostridium tetani

A

gram +ve spore forming bacillus, anaerobe

29
Q

what does clostridium tetani produce?

A

tetanospasmin - binds to ganglioside receptors and blocks release of inhibitory interneurones ie convulsive contraction of voluntary muscles

30
Q

what condition can tetanospasmin cause?

A

tetanus

31
Q

what are the symptoms involved in the tetanus?

A

tonic muscle spasms, trismus (spasm of the jaw muscles), opisthotonus (opisthen meaning “behind” in greek)

respiratory difficulties
cardiovascular instability

32
Q

what are the treatment of clostridium tetani induced meningitis ?

A

anti-toxin, penicillin or metronidazole
