CP1 Forces and Motion Flashcards
What is a vector quantity?
one that has size and a specific direction. i.e. force
The weight of the person is 50N downwards
What is a scalar quantity?
one that has size but no specific direction. i.e. mass
What is velocity?
Velocity is speed in a stated direction. Velocity is a vector, speed is a scalar.
What is velocity measured in?
metres per second m/s
What is the formula for (average) speed?
(average) speed = distance / time
What is displacement?
Distance from the starting point.
Is displacement a vector?
Yes, so displacements should include the direction
How many m in a km?
1000
How many metres is 2.5km?
2.5 x 1000 = 2500m
Does a car travelling at 5m/s travel further in 1 minute or 1 second?
1 minute
How many seconds in a minute?
60
How many minutes in an hour?
60
How do you convert from km/h to m/h?
x 1000
How do you convert from m/h to m/min?
divide by 60 (because you will travel LESS metres in a minute than in an hour)
How do you convert m/min to m/s?
divide by 60 (because you will travel LESS metres in a second than in a minute)
What sum do you do to convert 5km/h to m/s?
5 x 1000
÷ 3600
