Covalent Ionic Flashcards
Giant ionic structure always with ionic bonding
High melting - boiling
Closely packed 3D lattice
Attraction between changed ions - electrostatic attraction - very strong
Lots of energy needed to overcome bonds.
NaCl
Charges and giant covalent structures.
Higher charges higher electrostatic force of attraction.
High melting boiling
Giant covalent structures
Bonded by strong covalent bonds.
Lots of energy to break um - Very high melting boiling.
Insoluble don’t conduct e
Diamond
Giant co struct
Carbon forms 4 covalent bonds.
Very rigid extremely hard.
Used for drill tips and cutting tools.
Graphite
Each Carbon only forms 3 covalent bonds = layers free to slide past each other.
Leaves delocalised e- only non metal which conducts e- well.
Lubricant.
