Covalent Bonding Test Review Flashcards
What are the properties of water due to hydrogen bonding?
- Relatively high melting and boiling points for a compound with a low mass
- Liquid over a broad range of temperature values
- High specific heat values
- Water expands upon freezing
- Universal solvent (can dissolve both polar and ionic substances)
What is a coordinate covalent bond?
Type of bond when one atom donates both e- to the bond
What is LDF?
London Dispersion Forces or induced dipole (weakest IMF, in all molecules)
Non-polar molecules only have LDF
All covalent molecules will have LDF
LDF forces become stronger with higher molecular mass
What are dipole forces?
Occur as the result of the attraction between polar molecules
What is a hydrogen bond?
Strongest IMF
A force not a bond between 2 molecules
Only occurs when hydrogen is bound to a small, highly electronegative atom (N, O, F)
What are the exceptions for VSEPR Theory?
Linear (5 cloud) and square planar (6 cloud) - NP
