Q

What are the properties of a simple molecular substance

A

Substance made up of molecules
Low melting and boiling points due to weak intermolecular forces of attraction result

Q

What are the properties of giant covalent structures

A

Often insoluble
Don’t conduct electricity, even when molten
Strong forces of attraction result in high melting and boiling points

Q

Describe the structure and properties of diamond

A

Carbon atoms with 4 covalent bonds each
High melting point
Rigid lattice structure so diamond is very hard
No delocalised electron or ion means it does not conduct electricity

Q

Describe the structure and properties of graphite

A

Each carbon atom has 3 covalent bonds
Layers of carbon atoms that are able to slide past one another due to weak intermolecular forces of attractions, making graphite soft and slippery
Has a high melting point Rigid point
Has a delocalised electron so is able to conduct electricity

Q

Describe the structure and properties of C60 Fullerene

A

60 carbon atoms.
Made up of large covalent molecules
The molecules are held together by intermolecular forces so they can slide over each other, making C60 Fullerene soft
Poor conductor of electricity despite a delocalised electron which is not able to move between molecules
