Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
-When does a covalent bond form?
A
-A covalent bond forms when two non-metal atoms share a pair of electrons in the outer shell.
2
Q
-What are some properties of covalent bonds?
A
- Covalent bonds are very strong meaning a lot of energy is required to break them.
- They have low melting and boiling points.
- Have weak intermolecular forces between molecules; meaning only a small amount of heat energy is required to separate the molecules.
3
Q
-How many bonds can covalent bonds share?
A
-Covalent bonds can share not only one but two or more pairs of electrons.
4
Q
-How do you work out how many covalent bonds an element will form?
A
-8 minus the elements group number.
