covalent,3 states, diamond,graphite Flashcards
3 states of matter
solid,liquid,gas
explain the three states of matter
solid particles are closely packed in a regular pattern and force of attraction between is strong, Liquid particles closely packed but moving around force of attraction is weak ,gas parties are widely spaced and moving around forces of attraction is very weak
what are cation and anions
cation is postively charges ions while anions are negatively charged ions
when a substance changes state….
the covalent bonds are not broken but the intermolecular forces are broken
as the molecular size increases
the intermolecular forces increase
small covalent molecules can or cannot conduct electricity?
they cannot as they have no delocalised electrons charges
properties of diamond
1.diamond has a giant covalent structure
2. each carbon atom has 4 bonds
3.high melting and boiling point
4.cannot conduct electricity
5. hard substance
properties of graphite
- graphite is soft due to the layers standing over each other
2.graphite is a good conduction of electricity as each carbon atom is boned to 3 others this means there is 1 delocalised electron to carry the charge through the structure
