Covaleng Bonding Flashcards
Sodium chloride
Crystalline, solids ( high melting points )
Conduct electricity as liquids
Insulators as solids ( ions can’t move )
Carbon dioxide
Gas ( low melting & boiling points )
Never conducts
What is covalent bonding
A shared pair of electrons to gain an outer shell
Properties of covalent materials:
Simple molecular
Doesn’t conduct electricity
Low melting & boiling point
Properties of covalent materials:
Giant molecular
Insoluble in water
Doesn’t conduct electricity
Highly melting & boiling point
Lattice structure
What is a polymer
A large molecule containing chains of carbon atoms
Properties of polythene
They are made from joining together many smaller carbon chains together
The longer the chain is, the more the melting z& boiling point will increase higher
The structure will become longer because there are more intermolecular bonds
