Q

Better wanting - A good job:
- enables me to use my signature strengths
- helps me experience “flow” or being in “the zone”
(i.e. complete focus on the activity, loss track of time, challenging but attainable goals,…)
“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times - although such experiences can also be enjoyable, if we have worked hard to attain them. The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.” (Mihaly Csikszentmihaly)
Research shows most people experience “flow” when they’re at work, not at leisure. But they believe that doing the opposite (leisure) is what would make them happy. Thus, I shouldn’t trust what my brain says I want, instead trust the science and start to work and experience flow. This will make me happy and fulfilled.

Q

Better wanting - grades:
- science shows good grades don’t give us as much happiness and satisfaction as we think.
- Grades also steal away the deep intrinsic motivation for learning in general.
- focusing on grades undermines growth mindset.
People with a “fixed mindset” focus a lot on grades bec they think intelligence & skills are fixed and grade is a measure of that. They think “if I have to work, I’m not smart”. Effort = bad sign => shy away whenever they get challenging task. hide deficiencies and mistakes.
But people with a growth mindset focus a bit on grades but only as a measure of whether or not you’re learning; they believe they can improve grades/ skills/ intelligence through hard effort. They know good performance takes hard work. They know hard work is what makes them better. Effort = good sign. Make the most of deficiencies and capitalise on mistakes.
Growth mindset is the correct one, hard work makes u better.
=> Students shouldn’t want good grades, they should want a good mindset, i.e. growth mindset.
People can change from fixed to growth mindset by learning/reading scientific evidence of the growth mindset.
