course 1 Flashcards
What is a split brain patient
are individuals who have had their corpus callosum, severed in order to reduce interhemispheric seizure activity that can occur in serious cases of epilepsy.
Can a split-brain patient tell you what they see in their left visual field?
patients will be unable to verbally identify pictures shown in the left visual field, as this information is handled by the right brain hemisphere, which is incapable of generating language and—in split-brain patients—cannot communicate with the speech-capable left side
what is the reticular threory?
the nervous system was composed of a continuous network of specialized cells without gaps (synapses),
What is the Neuron theory?
each nerve cell communicates with others through contiguity rather than continuity.
What is the structure of a neuron
dendrits
cell body
axons
What are the types of the neurons?
uipolar
bipolar
pseudo-uiporal
multipolar
what are the types of neural connections?
Divergence: the sensory information from a single sit is distributed more widly in the spinal cord and brain
Convergence: input from many presynaptic cells is required to activate the motor neuron
What are the functional regions of a neuron
Input
integrative
conductive
output
when the action potantial is generated?
Only if the receptor potantial exceeds a certain voltage treshold
