Cours 2 Flashcards
What is the ecological success dependent on?
Growth, survival, reproduction influenced by resources and constraints
How do resources influence an organism’s performance?
Positively
What is the effect of constraints on an organism’s performance?
Negatively
What are ecological conditions?
Factors that cannot be consumed but are necessary for survival, e.g., wind, air, temperature, salinity, pH
Define resources in an ecological context.
Elements present in limited quantities that, when exploited, can lead to their depletion
What are the two types of nutrition resources?
- Nutrition for growth
- Nutrition for maintenance
What do resources allow organisms to increase?
Phenotypic aptitude, survival, growth, and reproduction
What are renewable resources?
Resources that are constantly regenerated, e.g., sunlight
What are non-renewable resources?
Resources that are not regenerated, e.g., space
What determines the distribution of organisms in space and time?
Ecological factors
What are abiotic factors?
Climatic and physico-chemical factors affecting organisms
Give examples of abiotic factors.
- Temperature
- Water
- Salinity
- Air
- Dissolved gases
- Light
- Soil conditions
What are biotic factors?
Interactions with other organisms
What is the definition of biocénose?
The interaction between living organisms and their environment
What influences geographical distribution and limits of organisms?
Response curves to variations affecting mortality
