Couplings Flashcards
List the various types of couplings
Riged
Flexible
Universal
Centrifugal
What’s clutching and braking?
Clutching- transfers torque
Braking- stops and holds loads
What’s a sleeve coupling?
Long, heavy duty, thick walled tube, with a key way
What’s a Flanged coupling?
Two flanged hubs, bolted together with bolts
What’s a compression coupling?
Two flanged hubs with taper bores, with split tapered sleeves
What’s a clamp (muff) coupling?
Like a sleeve coupling but split and bolted together- (used at slow speeds)
What are the three most common categories of flexible couplings?
-mechanically flexible
-elastomeric
-universal joints
What’s a mechanical flexible coupling?
Jaw and slider
Gear, double engagement
Chain
Metallic grid
Metallic disk
What’s a jaw/slider coupling
Two jawed hubs
And a slider block-(square/rectangular rubber piece)
What’s a gear type, double engagement coupling?
Two curved external gears mating in an internal hub.. (allows 1.5 degrees of misalignment)
What’s chain coupling?
Two sprockets coupled by a double chain
What’s a metallic grid coupling?
Flat steel grid that weaves in and out through grooves
What’s a metallic disk coupling
Flat centre member is connected to disk which are bolted to hubs. Good for high speeds
What are Jaw elastomeric couplings?
(Love joy). Two hubs with jaws connected though a spider/ruber
What’s a unclamped doughnut coupling?
Two hubs with small teeth connected through a elastomer/rubber
What’s a clamped doughnut coupling?
Has two hubs that are connected by a split flexible element that has inserts that are bolted to the hubs
What’s a clamped tire coupling?
Two hubs clamped/bolted to a flexing element/rubber tire
What’s a bushed pin coupling?
Two hubs with pins. With a rubber element in between that has bushings
What’s an offset coupling?
Two hubs linked together by link arms and a centre plate
What is a thermal cutout?
It’s a Heat sensor, when there is excess amount of slippage it will heat up and shut machine down
