Coupling Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
Coupling reactions
A
Transfer of energy from an exergonic to endergonic reaction
- to drive endergonic reaction to completion
- all endergonic reactions in the body are coupled to exergonic reactions (happen at the same time)
2
Q
ATP
A
“The Free Energy Carrier” - its only function is to supply free energy that can do useful work in the body
3
Q
Examples of ATP
A
- transport of ions (active transport)
- contraction of muscles
- moving chromosomes in cell division
- driving endergonic reactions
- beating of cilia (endergonic)
4
Q
Hydrolysis of ATP into ADP
A
An exergonic process that releases free energy, which can perform useful work in the body
5
Q
Why does ATP want to change?
A
Its very unstable and wants to break down and change, and it is unusable in that state
