Domestic division of labour
The roles that men and women play in relation in housework.
Instrumental role
The functionalist role of the husband. Geared towards achieving financial success. The main breadwinner.
Expressive role
The functionalist role of the wife. Geared towards primary socialisation of children and meeting emotional needs of family. Homemaker - a full-time housewife.
Segregated conjugal roles
Couples have separate roles: male breadwinner, female homemaker. Leisure activities tend to be separate.
Joint conjugal roles
Couples share tasks like housework and childcare. Tend to spend leisure activities together.
Symmetrical family
The roles of the husband and wife, although not identical, becoming much more similar.
New man
The march of progress view that husbands are taking on more traditionally feminine roles within the home.
Dual burden
Women who are doing paid work along with unpaid domestic work.
Emotion work
The management of emotions and feelings of family members. Usually the role of the wife.
Triple shift
The idea that women are performing housework, paid work, and emotion work in the home.
Quality time
The time organised for a family to spend time together.
Cultural/ideological explanation of inequality
The idea that the division of labour is controlled by patriarchal norms and values that shape the gender roles and culture.
Material/economic explanation of inequality
The idea that women generally earn less than men, meaning that it’s more economically rational to have men work whilst women do housework.
Gender scripts
Tasks that conform to ones gender identity.
The allowance system
Where men give their wives an allowance to budget for the family.
