Fugal subject
Primary thematic material for a fugue
Real answer
Exact transposition of the subject to the key of the dominant
Tonal answer
Tonally adjusted answer of the subject at the level of the dominant (key doesn’t change, scale degree pattern of subject is shifted 5th higher)
Countersubject
Accompaniment to the subject that returns to accompany each time the subject or its answer returns
Fugal exposition
First section of a fugue where all voices have entered (subject and answer)
Episode
Material from subject is developed by all the voices in freely contrapuntal texture until restatement
Stretto
Melodic material enters in one voice, then in another before the first voice is done w/statement of material. Creates overlap
