Cough with load sound, thick yellow phlegm w/ aversion to cold, fever
No sweat, headache, body ache
P: floating / tight
Wind-heat cough Pattern
Cough with loud hyperactive sound
Thick yellow phlegm with exterior warm signs
Fever, slight wind/cold aversion, headache, red, swollen painful throat
P: floating, rapid
Autumn dryness exterior Pattern
Dry cough with little phlegm or possibly with blood streaks Coughing does not clear phlegm Dry- mouth, nose, throat + thirst Happens in autumn P: floating
Cold Evil Settling in the Lungs
Cough with heavy turbid sound (severe- 5th watch/night cough)
The phlegm may be thick or thin, profuse or scanty
With cold signs- white complexion, cool limbs, lack of thirst clear urination
Often in autumn/ winter
P: slow
T: white tongue fur
Heat Evil Congesting the Lungs (Qi aspect)
Cough with loud and hyperactive sound Coughing up thick, smelly, yellow phlegm/blood streaked Severe- panting, rough breathing Often with Fever, pain in chest/ rib side Reddish urine, bloody stools T: Red/yellow fur P: rapid, forceful
Summer heat Damage
Dry cough w/out phlegm or scanty frothy sputum
Rapid breathing, pain in the chest
Vigorous fever, vexing thirst, profuse sweat

Headache, head dizziness, fatigued limbs
In summertime
P: surging, rapid
Dryness Evil Damaging Lung Pattern
Dry cough w/out phlegm or thick sticky phlegm - may be blood-streaked
Combined/
Lung fluids signs- severe cough, dry nose + throat, thirst with desire for fluids, dry skin, dry stools, scanty urine
T: dry w/ thin fur
P: fine/rapid
Long Bout cough pattern (100-day cough)
Whooping cough
w/ signs
Coughing with a red face, hands curled into fists, bending waist
heads/ neck muscles engorged, eyes red and swollen, eyes tearing, dripping nose
The pattern is infectious and common in children in summer
Diphtheria (White Throat Pattern)
Cough sounds like dog barking
Signs w/
White membranes on encircling throat - if peeled- bleeds
Often w/ fever, nasal obstruction, hoarseness
Foul odor in the mouth, if severe - hard to breathe
Nasal flaring, lips green/blue, heart palps
Infectious
Measles
Cough maybe w/ fever+tearing of eyes
Sticky white millet-like membranous spots on mouth
Lung Qi Vacuity
Enduring cough May have night cough Forceless coughing/ panting W/ thin white phlegm + signs of insufficiency of the function of the lungs SOB, low voice, laziness speaking, \+ qi def signs - pale complexion, spontaneous sweating T: pale with white fur P: vacuous
Lung Yin Vacuity Pattern
Dry cough, hoarseness, enduring cough with scanty thick phlegm,blood-streaked W/ lung dryness Lo, hoarse voice, dry throat, mouth Yin depletion signs Red cheeks, emaciation, vexing heat, night sweats P: Fine, rapid T: Red with scanty fluids Pregnancy cough
Damp-phlegm Obstructing the Lung pattern
Enduring Cough With profuse white phlegm -either thick or thin, easily expectorated
Maybe a wheezing cough
W/damp phlegm
Glomus, chest/St duct,
+ sometimes signs of turbo intake
T: pale enlarged tender tongue w/ thick slimy, greasy fur
Water-Cold Invading the Lung Pattern(Spillage Rheum Pattern)
Cough with SOBand possibly painting with scanty qi + copious thin white phlegm or frothy rheum
Cough with water swelling
W/ signs of KD/SP yang not transforming water
The white complexion, fear of cold, cold limbs, withered spirit, HT palps, scanty urine, sloppy stools
Propping Rheum pattern
Enduring cough, cough with panting rising counterflow, fullness in the chest, SOB
Inability to breathe lying down, profuse white phlegm,
Floating edema of head/face
Tendency to contract wind-cold easily
T: White, scanty tongue fur
P: Stringlike, tight
Liver-Fire Invading The Lung Pattern
Spasmodic coughing, creating rib side pain
Cough is increased/made more severe w/ strong effect- serve may be blood-streaked
Often comes with LV fire flaming upwards
Impatience, anxiety, anger, redface, eyes, dry throat, bitter mouth, dizziness
P: rapid, string like
Blood Stasis Cough Pattern
Cough w/ fishy smell in throat + coughing of dark purple blood Lying on one side may cause more cough Signs of blood stasis Dusky, SOB, purple complexion P: bound/ regularly intruded T: Dusky
