Size

A
Position: full sun or partial shade
Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained soil
Rate of growth: average to fast-growing
Flowering period: May
Hardiness: fully hardy

The glossy dark green leaves of this small, spreading, deciduous shrub are studded with tiny, pinkish-white flowers in May, followed by bright red autumn berries. The leaves turn orange-red before they fall. The branches form a pretty herringbone pattern, which means the plant looks stunning grown flat against a wall. It is also an excellent groundcover plant for a sunny border

Garden care: After flowering, lightly cut back any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. In autumn trim back lightly any branches that obscure the display of fruit.

Position: full sun or partial shade
Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained soil
Rate of growth: average
Flowering period: June
Flower colour: milky white
Other features: the seeds of the fruit may cause mild stomach upset if ingested.
Hardiness: fully hardy

Clusters of milky white flowers in June, followed by bright red autumn berries which persist into winter. This dense, evergreen shrub makes a fantastic informal hedge for a sunny or partly shady site. It’s ideal for the wildlife garden, since the flowers and fruit are a valuable food source for birds and bees.
Garden care: In late spring or early summer after flowering lightly cut back any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. In autumn trim back lightly any branches that obscure the display of fruit.

A

2m x 1m high

When established this low-growing evergreen shrub will form a dense mat of weed-smothering foliage. It is not at all boring though as it is smothered in late spring and early summer with small creamy white flowers. These are followed in in autumn with masses of orange-red berries, which will not only look great, but will also help attract birds into the garden
