Q

How is freeze thaw weathering occur

A

Water gets into rocks with cracks
Water freezes and it expands
The water thaws and contracts which releases the pressure on the rock
The rock is hard to break up

Q

How is carbonation weather formed

A

Rainwater has CO2 dissolved in it which is a weak carbonic acid
Carbonic acid reacts with rock that contains calcium carbonate
Rocks are dissolved by rain water

Q

How is a wave cut platform form

A

Erosion at the foot of the cliff
Forms wave cut notch
Rock above comes unstable and then collapses
Collapsed material is then washed away and a new wave cut notch is formed
Repeated collapsing results in cliff retreating
Wave cut platform is left behind

Q

How is a headland and bays formed

A

Headlands are more resistant so they don’t erode

Bays are less resistant so they are susceptible to erosion and forms beaches

Q

How is a stump formed

A

Headland gets eroded due to hydraulic action to form weakness cracks
Forms a wave due to continuous erosion of hydraulic action and abrasion
Erosion form a arch by pushing the cave through by erosion
Biological weathering undercuts the arch and it becomes weak and collapses to form a stack
Due to constant weathering the stack weathers down to a stump
