Cosmos ch.11 Flashcards
Waves
A disturbance in a medium, it carries energy. Examples (water waves, light, sound)
Quantities of Waves
Amplitude (AMP)- Size
Period (T)- Time of one cycle
Frequency (F)- How many cycles in a given second
Wave length (λ)- How long a wave is in space
Speed of Waves
It is determined by the properties of the materials. The wave speed, frequency, and wavelength are related.
Types of Waves
Transverse
Medium travels perpendicular to wave velocity
Superposition and Interference (2 types of this)
When waves overlap they interfere with each other.
(1) Constructive interference.
(2) Destructive interference
Constructive Interference
Increases the amplitude of a wave
Destructive Interference
Decreases the amplitude of the wave
Diffraction
The bending of waves around an object, shadows don’t have sharp edges because of this, light passing through a small opening interferes with itself given a diffraction pattern.
Young’s Double Slit Experiment
Proved that light was a wave
Experiment was a single light behind a screen with 2 slits in it
The dark and bright fringes on the screen proved that light is a wave
