Cosmological, moral, design argument Flashcards
What does philosophy mean?
Love + wisdom/knowledge
What does cosmological argument argue?
‘Cosmos’ is a greek word for the world. Cosmological argument argues that from the existence of the world and its perceived state of order, to the existence of our creator, God.
Translation for ‘ex nihilo nihil fit’
Nothing comes from nothing.
‘God is the every first cause, the unmoved mover’. There cannot be an infinite regress of causes. What are the problems of this theory?
1) perhaps the universe had no beginning
2) universe started on its own
Basically Big Bang theory- a scientific theory about how the universe came into existence
What is cosmological argument
An attempt to prove that God exists (first cause) from observing how the universe works.
What is another name for cosmological argument?
First cause
What is another name for design argument?
Teleological argument
What is analogy?
A comparison between 2 things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification.
What are the problems with his theory?
David Hume- Atheist argument
-> designer may not be around
-> designer can be bad
Problem with his theory:
-> By its own accord- Big Bang theory
-> No beginning
-> Charles Darwin: not by designer but natural selection
Try to prove the existence of God (two arguments)
Cosmological and design
Moral -»>
right and wrong
we have this universal object moral law in us.
Must be
A common source. God.
Since moral knowledge exists, there must be a mind
God
Our moral knowledge->
A kind of evidence of God.
What is evidence?
Something that suggests truth (evidence is not always proof)
What is proof?
something which establishes and absolute fact
All of us have a
guilty conscience
Our guilty conscience is
God’s voice
Our conscience gives evidence
that there is a God
Moral argument does not imply there is a God
It is the process of adaption for survival that people can learn to co-operate by choosing not to destroy each other
Voice of our parents- Sigmund Freud
What we learn from our parents and community when we were young will develop into our unconscious mind (social conditioning)
Explains why there is a discrepancy among the people in response to stealing or killing.
The morally necessary argument- Immanuel Kaut
-suppose we lived in a world in which no one believed in God
-Will there be a motive for people to be altruistic?
Argument is that only a person believed in God and believed in life after death would prepare to commit themselves in this way.
- If there was no God, there would be no basis for a true moral life
What is absolute morality?
-Have a fixed approach to what is right or wrong
-If something is right, then, it is right in every situation, age and culture
What is relative morality?
Something is morally right or wrong if you or the society to which you belong it is
