Cosmological Argument Flashcards
A Posteriori
post evidence , based on evidence which already exists
Synthetic
truth can only be observed by experience or observation
Inductive
conclusion is a statement about what is most probable rather than definite
Contnigent
depend on something else for its existence e.g universe
Necessary
does not depend on anything else for its existence e.g God
Aquinas
italian priest influnced by Plato and aristotle , natural law
The first way - Prime Unmoved mover
Things move from potentiality to actuality ..Things that move must be moved by something .. things cannot move themselves . Furthermore things are evidently in motion .. there can not be a infinite chain of movers so there has to be an unmoved mover God
Prime Unmoved mover , Newtons 1st law
a particle would tend to stay at restor move in a constant velocity if no external force is applied to it … no need for God
Unmoved mover ?
eveything that initaites change must have been initiated itself
unmoved mover , Michealson and Morley
there is no absolute frame of reference in the universe .. no absolute motion
The second way - uncaused causer
eveything has an efficent cause .. the universe has one God because aquinas did not believe in infinite regress
The third way - contingency
solves the problem of God being the first yet not having a cause he is necessary not contingent .
everything in the world and the universe is contingent and needed something to bring it to existence … God
Contingency in nature
ecosystems - existence of other species depends on each other and natural resources
Gottfried lebniz
german philospher , mathemetician
principle of sufficent reason
if something exists there must be a reason why it exists
if a statement is truue ..
is something happens …
