COSHH Flashcards
What is it?
the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health
What we should do
Each practice must keep a COSHH file detailing the risk assessment on all materials + chemicals used in the practice. A data safety sheet to be included on all relevant materials
What else must COSHH file contain
a written report containing:
- the hazardous ingredients it contains
- the nature of the risk, ideally by indicating the risk category using recognised symbols
- the possible health effect of the hazardous ingredients
- the precautions required for the safe handling of the product
1.
identify the substance
2.
who may be harmed
3.
how may they be harmed
4.
evaluate the risk and control
5.
record assessment
6.
record all staff of the risks
Storage
stored in cupboards away from public access, with separate fire-resistant locked storage for inflammable substances and poisons. normally room temp (20c) or cooler by refrigeration. Mercury must be stored in cool cupboard in sealed containers
Oxygen + nitrous oxide
for conscious sedation should ideally be stored outdoors but if not - a well ventilated fire resistant store. Larger cylinders must be upright so they don't fall over. Oxygen cylinders (emergency) must be easily accessed
