Cortex and Ways of organizing the cortex Flashcards
1
Q
Fissure
A
Deep and sulcus - shallow
2
Q
Gyrus
A
ridge or wrinkle
3
Q
Central sulcus, lateral fissure, medial longitudinal fissure
A
that’s all
4
Q
Projection map
A
- Primary projection areas: sensory and motor
- Secondary projection areas – projections to and from adjacent area
- Association areas – between secondary areas – responsible for higher-level cognitive functions
5
Q
Cytoarchitectonic map
A
- 6 layers of cortex. Each has different types of cells. Different layers are prominent in different parts of the brain depending on the area’s function.
- 5 & 6 send axons to other brain areas. Cells are large. Prominent in the motor cortex.
- 4 receives axons from other areas of the brain. Densely packed small cells. Prominent in primary sensory areas.
- 1, 2 & 3 receive input primarily from layer 4. Prominent in secondary projection and association areas.
- Brodmann’s areas based on cytoarchitectonics.

Q
Functional map
A
- Brain electrically stimulated and the person’s response in noted.
- Imaging techniques PET, fMRI
- Homunculus
