Q

Projection map

A
  • Primary projection areas: sensory and motor
  • Secondary projection areas – projections to and from adjacent area
  • Association areas – between secondary areas – responsible for higher-level cognitive functions

Q

Cytoarchitectonic map

A
  • 6 layers of cortex. Each has different types of cells. Different layers are prominent in different parts of the brain depending on the area’s function.
  • 5 & 6 send axons to other brain areas. Cells are large. Prominent in the motor cortex.
  • 4 receives axons from other areas of the brain. Densely packed small cells. Prominent in primary sensory areas.
  • 1, 2 & 3 receive input primarily from layer 4. Prominent in secondary projection and association areas.
  • Brodmann’s areas based on cytoarchitectonics.
