Corrie Formation Flashcards
Abrasion
Rock fragments trapped in the glacier grind against the valley floor wearing it away like sandpaper
Freeze-thaw
This is a type of weathering. The action of water flowing into cracks, freezing and becoming ice (when temperatures drop) and widening the cracks so much that rock breaks apart
Plucking
When meltwater at the base of the glacier frewzes on the rock surface. As the glacier moves forward it extracts pieces of the rock surface
Scree
Accumalation of loose stones/rocky debris at the base of the mountain
Moraine
Material that has been carried and deposited by a glacier
Glacier
Large masses of frozen ice that slowly move downhill
Tarn
A small lake that forms in the hollow when a glacier has melted
What direction does a corrie usually face
North or east
Name of the circular motion in a glacier
Rotational slip
Step one of a corrie formation
Snow accumulates in a protected hollow usually on the north or north-east facing parts of a mountain
A year later a glacier forms
