Correlations, averages and dispersion Flashcards
What is a correlation?
-A relationship or association between two variables.
What is a positive correlation?
-Where both variables increase together.
What is a negative correlation?
-Where one variable decreases in value as the other increases.
How are correlations normally visualised?
-With a scatter graph and sometimes a line of best fit.
How is a mean calculated?
-Add up all off the values and divide by the original number of results.
How is a median calculated?
-Arrange all results in order and see which result is in the middle (if there are two values, find the mean of them)
How is a mode calculated?
-See which value occurs the most.
How is a range calculated?
-Subtract the smallest result from the largest result. (in psychology we add one for some reason)
What is standard deviation?
-How far results vary from the mean.
How is standard deviation calculated?
- Either: subtract the mean value from the highest value.
- Or: subtract the lowest value from the mean value.
