Correlations Flashcards
What is a correlation?
The study of the relationship between two factors/variables
What is a positive correlation?
As one variable increases the other variable increases too
What is a negative correlation?
As one variable increases the other variable decreases
What is the number for a perfect positive correlation?
+1
What are the numbers of a strong positive correlation?
0.8, 0.9 and 1
What are the numbers for a moderate positive correlation?
0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7
What are the numbers for a weak positive correlation?
0.1, 0.2 and 0.3
What is the number for no correlation?
0
What is the number for a perfect negative correlation?
-1
What are the numbers for a moderate negative correlation?
-0.4, -0.5, -0.6 and -0.7
What are the numbers for a weak negative correlation?
-0.1, -0.2, -0.3
What is a strength of correlations?
Allows us to understand things that would be unethical to manipulate
→ Provides a baseline understanding
What are 2 limitations of correlations?
Correlation does not mean causation → a 3rd variable could be responsible instead
Correlations lack control → hard to establish the cause and effect → question internal validity
