Coronary heart disease Flashcards

1
Q

What is coronary heart disease?

A

Non communicable disease
Coronary arteries become blocked by a build up of fatty material in the artery wall.
Reduces amount of blood delivered to the heart tissue
lack of oxygen causes heart cells to die

Q

What is a stent used for?

A

Inserted into a blocked artery.
Pushed against the artery wall by inflating a balloon
Increases the lumen of the artery
Allows more blood (glucose and oxygen) to reach the heart muscle

Q

How does diet, smoking and exercise affect the development of cardiovascular disease?

A

Fatty diet increases chance of cardiovascular disease

high levels of LDL cholesterol causes arteries to become blocked, increasing blood pressure and risk of a heart attack

17
Q

How does smoking affect the development of cardiovascular disease?

A

Smoking increases chance of cardiovascular disease
Nicotine increase heart rate
Other chemicals in smoke damage artery lining and increase blood pressure
Increases blood pressure putting more strain on the heart

18
Q

How does exercise affect the development of cardiovascular disease?

A

Exercise lowers chance of cardiovascular disease
Lowers blood pressure
Increases efficiency of the heart and lungs
Reduces strain on the heart
