Coronary Heart disease Flashcards
What are the coronary arteries
the arteries that supply blood to the heart
what happens during CHD to blood flow
coronary arteries get full of fatty material preventing blood flow - making the heart respire anaerobically
how is CHD caused in the artery
high blood pressure causes endothelium cells to get damaged
this means fatty material can build up inside without getting pushed away
therefore the artery narrows
platelets can get damaged due to high pressures causing clots
clots prevent blood flow to the heart so it no longer contracts
what else can happen with fatty deposits
bits can break off and block capillaries
what increases chance of CHD
high cholesterol
what affects blood cholesterol
genetics
diet
what food source mostly affects cholesterol
saturated fats
unsaturated
what carries cholesterol round the body
LDL low density lipoproteins and HDL high density lipoproteins
what does LDL do
causes cholesterol to remain in blood - BAD
what does HDL do
causes cholesterol to be removed from blood - GOOD
how do we control cholesterol (diet)
avoid saturated fats
eat unsaturated fats
(Mono - unsaturated and Poly - unsaturated)
What drug is used to reduce cholesterol
Statins they shut down liver enzyme
how do you know if you have CHD
use a angiogram to see blockage
what is used to widen lumen and increase blood flow
a stent
