- Explain how muscles work as a pair and to bend the arm at the elbow causing movement at the joint. Make sure you discuss the type of joint movement.
Flexion of a joint is a decrease of the joint angle from the Antomical position. When the elbow is bent the forearm is constracted or has pulled the bone of the forearm. Most Flexion takes place in a forward direction. The exception of this is the leg where Flexion of the leg results in bending the knee. Extension of the joint is when the joint is returned to anotomical position or increased the angle of the joint, which means the extensor is contracte. An example of this is when the triceps Brachi (extensor) contracts to straighten the arm. The biceps Brachii muscle (flexor) in the upper arm contracts to bend the elbow. Muscles work in pairs so that at the same time, the biceps brachii muscle (flexor) contracts to bend the joint and the tricepts brachii returns to its original length. To straighten the arm or extend the joint, the tricepts brachii (extensor) contracts while the biceps returns to its oringinal length.
